Leadership is rarely defined by what happens to us. It is defined by how we respond.

Think about a difficult conversation, unexpected feedback, a challenge to your authority, a missed expectation or a high-stakes decision.

In moments like these, our responses often feel immediate.

Before we speak or act, an internal sequence unfolds in seconds—shaped by our beliefs, interpretations, emotions and learned patterns.

Much of it happens outside our awareness.

Yet it influences everything that follows: the quality of our decisions, the way we communicate, the trust we build, the influence we have and the results we create.

This internal operating system shapes how we interpret situations, make decisions and respond under pressure.

Most leaders notice the response, but few recognise the internal pattern that created it.

The PATTERN Model™ makes that invisible process visible.

Not simply to increase self-awareness, but to help leaders recognise automatic reactions, create space for choice, and respond with greater awareness, clarity and intention.

Because leadership changes the moment you realise you have a choice.

The PATTERN Sequence

Every leadership response follows an internal sequence.

1. PROMPT

What happened?

The event, situation or interaction that triggers a response.

2. ACTIVATION

What was activated in me?

The internal reaction that begins before conscious thought—the emotions, beliefs or assumptions that are triggered.

CHOICE POINT #1

Pause. Notice. Become aware.

What is happening inside me right now?

Awareness creates space for a different choice.

3. THOUGHT

What meaning am I giving this situation?

The interpretation, assumption or story we create about what is happening.

4. TENSION

What emotion am I experiencing?

The emotions and pressure arising from how we interpret the situation.

5. EXPRESSION

How do I choose to respond?

The words, behaviour or action through which the internal process becomes visible.

CHOICE POINT #2

Choose your response deliberately.

Rather than reacting from an old pattern, choose a response that reflects the leader you want to become.

6. RESULT

What impact did my response create?

The effect your response has on yourself, others and the situation.

7. NARRATIVE

What meaning will I carry forward?

The conclusions, beliefs or stories we create from the experience—which can influence how we respond the next time a similar situation occurs.

Why This Matters

Pressure doesn’t necessarily create our patterns. It reveals them.

It reveals them.

The patterns that once helped us succeed can quietly become the patterns that limit our leadership.

Perfectionism.
Control.
Over-responsibility.
Difficulty trusting others.
People-pleasing.
Avoidance.
Overthinking.

These patterns are not necessarily the problem.

The problem is remaining unaware of them—and continuing to operate from them automatically.

When we recognise the pattern we are in, we create the possibility of interrupting it. And that is where leadership begins: in the space between what happens and how you choose to respond.

From Pattern Recognition to Leadership Evolution

Recognising a pattern is not the end of the work.

It is the beginning.

The deeper question is:

Is the way I am currently operating still aligned with the leader I need to become?

Leadership evolution is not about eliminating the patterns that once helped you succeed.

It is about developing the awareness, flexibility and intentionality to choose differently when those patterns no longer serve you.

Because evolving your leadership is not about becoming someone else.

It is about becoming more intentional in how you think, decide, communicate and lead.

Awareness creates possibility.
Choice creates the power.
Leadership is the outcome.

The PATTERN Model™ helps leaders recognise—and use—the space between what happens and how they respond.
